Local boundaries changes to Derby
Recently the Local Government Boundary Commission (LGBC) has reviewed and changed the boundaries of some of Derby’s wards. The review has been taking place for more almost a year and the final recommendations have now been published and will be put before Parliament in December for final approval. The commissioners concluded that the city should retain 51 councillors as now but that instead of 17 wards currently, this would increase to 18. Three of the wards will have two councillors and the other 15 wards will have three councillors.
Reform Derby Leader Alan Graves has said the following on the matter:
“The opposition Reform Derby put forward about some of the ideas for Derby has been accepted. We mounted a strong attack on the boundary changes that were initially suggested by Labour who wanted to break up our voters in Alvaston, Allenton and Wilmorton.”
“Not only did members and Reform Derby put in submissions, we were buoyed by the many residents who added their views to the consultation. It worked with only a minor change to ward names.
My conclusion is that whilst gerrymandering is rife, there are elements of democracy if only you fight for them. It is possible to create that light at the end of the tunnel. I am very proud of taking the fight to them and winning.”
